Business Central Update 29.0: What Changes for Manufacturing Companies

Business Central Update 29.0: factory floor with a digital ERP dashboard

Business Central Update 29.0 starts the 2026 release wave 2. Microsoft lists roughly 80 new and updated features. For mid-sized manufacturers, that is a lot to digest. So we show which changes matter in daily work and what you should check before you update.

Business Central Update 29.0 at a Glance

Update 29.0 is the first version of release wave 2. New online customers receive it automatically. Existing customers get a notification when it becomes available. Administrators can then schedule it freely within five months. That window ends in February 2027.

Also, Microsoft has changed its information source. Since September 2026, new capabilities appear in the AI at Work roadmap instead of the former release plans. You can read the full list in the Microsoft release notes for Update 29.0.

Agents and Copilot: What Is Ready for Production?

Agents are the biggest theme in this update. Payables Agent matches purchase orders better. All agent tasks appear in one dedicated task pane. In addition, you can review agent-generated content directly on the page. Permissions for agents are also easier to manage. These features are generally available.

The Copilot chat experience, however, is only a public preview. Therefore, test it in a sandbox first. It is not meant for daily accounting work yet.

Permission management deserves special attention. Once agents create or change records, “who may do what” becomes a governance question.

Subcontracting, Quality and Warehouse: Updates for Manufacturers

These improvements matter most for manufacturing companies:

  • Subcontracting is easier to set up.
  • Subcontracting instructions carry over into purchase orders.
  • Inventory put-aways and picks work for subcontracting.
  • Quality tests and inspections need less manual work.
  • Direct transfer orders can be posted from warehouse-enabled locations.
  • Manufacturing documents and capacity calendars are more efficient to use.

Still, review your processes. The “manual” flushing method without requiring a pick becomes mandatory. If you use flushing in production, test this in advance.

Adapt Reports and Documents Without a Developer

The new document report experience uses an updated Word add-in. With it, you design invoices, delivery notes and order confirmations far more flexibly. Report themes create a consistent look. Header and footer layouts can be reused across documents. You can also show or hide content conditionally.

Please note: this experience is an optional feature and disabled by default. You switch it on deliberately.

Finance benefits as well. Several financial reports can run into one PDF. G/L account usage can be traced in finance reports. Changes to financial reports are now always logged.

Mandatory Changes in Update 29.0 to Check Before You Start

Several features become mandatory with version 29.0. They include:

  • disabling SOAP web services on Microsoft UI pages,
  • UI support for masking sensitive data,
  • new communication texts for reminder terms,
  • default values for financial reports.

The SOAP change deserves particular attention. If an integration or extension still uses SOAP against standard pages, clarify this before the update. Otherwise, you risk disruption in daily operations.

How to Prepare for the Update

  1. Set a date: Schedule the update within the window ending in February 2027.
  2. Use a sandbox: Test extensions, integrations and custom reports in advance.
  3. Separate GA from preview: Put only generally available features into your production plan.
  4. Check on-premises: Version 24 or earlier must first upgrade to version 25. In addition, obsolete objects are removed from the base application.

Structured preparation saves time and avoids surprises. If you need help with planning, testing or the upgrade itself, take a look at our implementation and upgrade services. We also offer consulting and training so your team can work confidently with the new features.

Frequently Asked Questions About Business Central Update 29.0

Do I have to install Update 29.0 immediately? No. Online customers can choose a date within five months. The window ends in February 2027.

Are all new features ready for production? No. The Copilot chat and EDI document exchange are public previews. Most other new features are generally available.

Is the update available for Germany, Austria and Switzerland? Yes. For on-premises installations, Microsoft provides download packages for DE, AT and CH.

Conclusion

Business Central Update 29.0 is not a revolution for every company. For manufacturers, the value lies in subcontracting, quality, reporting and the first practical agent features. The risk lies in the mandatory changes. A short sandbox test and a fixed update date help more than reading the full feature list.
